John was born to Charles Edward Steele and Lulu Shenemen Steele, the oldest of 4 children. His lineage is emigrant George (Stahl) Steele, Philip Steele, George Steele, George Steele, Moses Steele and Charles Edward. His siblings are Paul Victor, Lois Geraldine and Charles Stanley.

John graduated from Manchester College in N. Manchester, Indiana as a nurse. He served in the US Army during World War II in that capacity. He married Isabel Kohler on October 12, 1937 in New York. Her parents, Adam and Susan emigrated from Europe, she from Slovakia, then part of Hungary. They settled in Windber, PA. Adam was a coal miner.

John worked at the Todd Shipyards in Brooklyn. They had two children, Mary Rose and John Adam. John was raised in the Church of the Brethren.
