Birdie Elizabeth Powell was born on December 31, 1892. Birdie's father was James 'Joe' Josiah Powell, who was born December 1, 1856 in Texas and died March 22, 1933 in Tom Green County, Texas. He is laid to rest in the Wall Cemetery. Her mother was Maude Ann Virgina Sparks, who was born January 19, 1876 in Titus County, Texas and died August 2, 1948 in Tom Green County. She is laid to rest in Wall Cemetery by her husband. Joe Powell farmed near Mt. Pleasant, Texas and was one of the first to grow peaches commercially. Maude was a public school teacher in addition to raising ten children.

Birdie's siblings were Lura Capitola, Hobart Wayne, Ora Helen, Elvia Othelin, Owen Kermit, Mallie Rosemary, Goodman Voyan, Lella Josephine, and Cleddie Virginia Powell, of whom Birdie was the eldest.

Birdie was married to James Monroe Day in Titus County, Texas in 1908. They had three children; Iona Marie Day Allen, Weymouth Emerald Day, and Ralph Powell Day. Birdie remarried sometime before 1930 to Martin Franklin 'Ben' Wilhite in Titus County, Texas. They also had three children; Cody Larry Wilhite, Joe Wilhite, and Margaret Wilhite Shumate.

Birdie died on August 27, 1961 and was laid to rest in Cooper's Chapel Cemetery. Ben Wilhite died the following year in a car accident and was laid to rest by Birdie.
