The 1850 census gives his age as 13. During the Civil War he enrolled in the Confederate States Army, NC Co K 16th Inf Reg.
It is thought he married about 1872 to Mary Emily "Emma" Turner. Three sons were born to this marriage;
1. Henry Oscar b-1873
2. James Eular b-1875
3. John Hampton b-1877
John was dead by the time of the 1880 census. Emma, listed as a widow, and the boys are residing in the home of her parents.
