ELLENDER BARNES FAMILY

Some information from Genealogy of Shadrack Barnes of Rowan County, North Carolina by Pinckney G. McElwee, 1958:

Story Mary Alley

Ellender "Nellie" Barnes (14 Jan 1800 Madison Co., KY - 28 Nov 1881 Collin Co., TX) – a daughter of Shadrack and Hannah (Turner) Barnes and a sister of Thomas Barnes below–

Married Harrison Jamison (b. 23 Oct 1793 KY, d. 14 Nov 1861 Collin Co.) in Howard Co., MO, in 1818. Her tombstone incorrectly shows her name as Elenor, as do the probate records in Collin Co., TX.

He was a son of Sally Hubbard and Joseph Jamison, and a first cousin of Sally Hubbard, wife of John Barnes – a brother of Nelly's and Thomas'. (His mother was a sister of Durrett Hubbard, Sally's father.) He was veteran a of the War of 1812. He was the Sheriff of Boone Co., MO from 1822 to 1826. In 1848 they moved to Collin Co., where they farmed 640 acres of land about nine miles northwest of McKinney. They are buried in the Ware Cemetery, Collin Co., Texas. Their graves are marked with separate tombstones. At least two of their children are buried in the same cemetery (John Wesley and Rebecca E.) and probably some grandchildren. (Collin County (Texas) Cemetery Inscriptions Vol. 1 by Pitts, 1975)

Shortly before her death, an oral will was recorded and later probated in Collin Co., in which she left all of her property to her son, Milton Homer, and his wife, Martha, upon their promise to care for his sister, Rebecca – who was born blind – for the rest of her life. But since real property can't be devised by a nuncupative will in Texas, her land was divided, sold, and the proceeds distributed.

They had 14 children; two died in infancy
