David served as a private in the confederate Army during the last two years of the war. He served in Clanton's Brigade 14th Alabama Regiment.
When he and Modena married they began with practically nothing.
David was a farmer and a sawmill operator and had one of the earliest steam sawmills in northern Alabama, working up lumber when the forest resources of St. Clair County had scarcely been touched.
Modena had been reared in luxury and refinement, and her married life for a number of years was lived in close familiarity with privation. Her love and self sacrificing devotion left an indelible impress upon her children. Together they had nine children, all reaching mature years.
From the book: History of Alabama
