East Hawley Hunter Wounded by Buckshot
Charlemont, Dec. 4 – Walter A. Wells, 60, of East Hawley was seriously wounded in the left hip by a buckshot from a gun accidentally discharged by a companion while deer hunting at East Hawley this morning.
Wells with three companions had started out in search of deer when the gun held by one of the other men walking approximately five yards behind him was discharged. Dr. F. O. Matthews of Charlemont was called and after binding the wound had Wells taken to Franklin County hospital at Greenfield, where he underwent an operation late this afternoon.
Mystery surrounded the identity of the man holding the gun, for neither Dr. Matthews nor hospital officials named him tonight. Mr Wells, a member of the school committee, was accompanied by Raymond Wilbur of Charlemont and two Springfield men, P. Eugene Clark and Nelson Bliss.
At the hospital late tonight it was said Wells's condition was fair. Dr Matthews declared that the wounded man had suffered from a buckshot wound in the left lower part of the back. One shot went into the abdomen.

Wounded Hawley Hunter Now on Danger List
Charlemont, Dec 5 – Walter A Wells of East Hawley who was accidentally shot while hunting yesterday is on the danger list at the Franklin County hospital tonight. An operation performed by Dr H G Stetson of Greenfield late yesterday afternoon, failed to remove the shot which is still embedded in the body of the victim.
Mystery still surrounds the details of the accident, but as near as can be learned Wells was probably hit by a stray shot that rebounded or scattered from a charge that was fired at a deer. He was standing near the hunters when the shooting began, but was not near the range of the bullets.
