Honored Pioneer Lays Down Life's Burdens at 70
Ogden. Jan 21 - In the death of Thomas Etherington at 1 o'clock yesterday at this home in West Weber from cancer of the stomach, Ogden City, and Weber county loses one of its most influential and highly respected citizens and one who has done much after the upbuilding of this part of Utah. The announcements of his death will bring sorrow to the hearts of hundreds of relatives and friends throughout the entire state.

Thomas Etherington was the son of John and Elizabeth Henley Etherington. He was born Nov 1, 1837, in England. In 1854 he was baptized a member of the Church and the following year emigrated to Utah, enduring all the hardships of crossing the plains and those of the early pioneer life in Utah. He first located in Slaterville, where he took an active part in upbuilding the western part of the county, and in 1869 removed to West Weber, where he lived up to the time of his death. He was energetic both in church and public life. For many years he was superintendent of the West Weber Sunday school and served the people as constable. At the time when Johnston's army invaded Utah, he served in the militia. At the time of his death, he was a member of the high priests' quorum.

Mr. Etherington has taken a prominent part in the livestock business prominent state and was president of the Thomas Etherington Livestock corporation, which was organized only last year with a large capitalization. He has been one of the most energetic workers in the Intermountain Fair association and was one of the company's directors. For years he was president of the Slaterville Creamery company and has been interested in other large enterprises for the benefit of the people.

Besides a loving wife, he is survived by 12 children. 55 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at the Ogden tabernacle Thursday at 1 o'clock. The casket will be tabernacle Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning until 11 o'clock at his home in West Weber.
