James was the son of Arthur A. Mann and Winnaford Shields. He married Augusta Darge 22 Apr 1872; they divorced in 1891. They were parents of Mary Lavina, Grace Pearl, William Arthur, Edward Aaron, Oliver Hartley, Minta Bell, Eva Alice, Everett Jay and Ora Edith.

1898 Great Register on cards at Paradise Genealogical Society copied 24 May 2004: James Mann, b Illinois, lives at North Point, Farmer, 50, 5 ft 11 in dark complexion, hazel eyes, black hair.
Had large acreage, Butte City, Cohasset and Rock Creek areas.
Death Certificate: Residing at Butte Co. Infirmary 5 months, 15 days. In CA 56 years.
Heart of the Family Tree page 13 says that James was a wealthy rancher and sawmill owner. In 1870's his sawmill was at Cohasset, near Chico. Later, 1881-2, he bought the Eads and Thompson places at Rock Creek. He planted black walnut trees, and figs from slips of the old Darge fig tree at Chico.
