Samuel's parents moved the family from Sunderland, MA to Bennington, VT about 1761. Samuel married Lucy Safford in 1764 and remained in Bennington. All ten of his children were born there. In July 1784, he moved his family to Cambridge, VT. At the time, that area of Vermont was a wilderness. To travel from Bennington to Cambridge, they found their way by markings on the trees. There were only four or five families in the town when they arrived.
