Joseph worked smelting ore for the making of railroad iron in Pennsylvania. The Thorns came from Pennsylvania to Iowa in about 1868, crossing the Des Moines River (Mississippi) at Dubuque. They found the river full to its banks and no bridges being there in those days they had to camp on the river bank until the water lowered somewhat. Then they crossed the river swimming the oxen, as they drove ox teams in those days instead of Fords. They stopped at Dakota City, Iowa, where they were farmers.
