Hon. Seth A Backus died at his home in this borough on Thursday evening, APril 28, 1982, at the advanced age of nearly 79 years, the direct cause of his death being a stroke of paralysis he received about tow weeks prior to his demise.
The subject of this sketch was born in Lee, Mass, July 14, 1813. At an early age he emigrated to Ithace, Tompkins county, NY, where he learned the batter's trade, as occupation he followed for some time. He then engaged in the occupation of lumbering for many years.
In 1852 Mr. Backus settled in Smethport, where he engaged in the hotel and coal business.
1n 1856-7 he represented his district then composed of Clearfield, McKean and Eld counties, in the State Legislature and while at Harrisburg made an intelligent and useful legislator.
While at Ithaca, July 25, 1837, Mr. Backus was united in marriage to Miss Matilda C. Goodwin of Kidders Ferry, NY. The aged wife survives. This union was never blessed by any children, but during his infancy they adopted Mr. Frank W. Backus, his nephew, son of William Backus.
He had four brothers, William, Franklin, George, John C. and two sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Davis and Mrs. Mary Milliken of Lansing, NY. Only Mrs. Milliken survives.
The funeral was held at the house and his remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery.
