She lived in Greenwood, which was established by her great-grandfather, Harrison Reed, until 1969, when she moved to Pomona.
She graduated from Pomona High School in 1919 and the Kansas State Agricultural College in 1923. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Greenwood Baptist Church, the Pomona United Methodist Church, the Greenwood Grange, and was involved in Extension, 4-H programs and other community activities. She was the leader of the one of the first 4-H clubs in Franklin County.
She and her husband received the Master Farmer and Homemaker Award in 1957.
She married Harold H. VanHorn at Manhattan on May 30, 1923. He preceded her in death on March 29, 1985.
She is survived by a son, H. H. "Jack" VanHorn Jr.; two daughters, Marjorie L. Atkins and Dorothy E. Ingle; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Reed, and a sister, Leona Bodenhammer.
