Mary Ann Price was born on July 27, 1867 in Van Buren County, Iowa to Thomas Jefferson and Elizabeth (Newby) Price. She had 5 siblings, Louisa Jane, Mattie Brookhart, Emma Eckelberry, Josie Tice, and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Leaverton.

Their mother Elizabeth died May 11, 1876. Consequently, Mary and sister Josephine Price were sent to Rush County, Indiana where they were raised by James and Lucinda (Price) Downey. Lucinda was a cousin of Thomas Jefferson Price, Mary and Josie's father. Lucinda's father, John Price, and Thomas Jefferson Price's father, Elisha Galloway Price, were brothers.

Lucinda's husband was James Downey whose sister was Sarah J. (Downey) Ewing, married to John Milton Ewing. Sarah and John Ewing's son was William "Buck" Ewing. Mary Ann Price married William "Buck" Ewing on December 22, 1886. To this union were born 7 children. Paul, Mabel, John Guy, Donzel LaRue "Rue", Earl J, Horace Worth, and Max William Ewing. Paul, Mabel, and Earl J. Ewing preceded their mother in death.
