Then in 1871 moved into Carthage opening his law office. He helped guide the reconstruction following the Civil War to a high level and was among the active attorneys of Carthage. In 1881 he filed the plat for new town of Jasper, formerly known as Midway and became known as "father of Jasper".
Acting for the Missouri-Pacific RR he obtained title to most of the town and was given 1/6 the interest for land in original plat filed 26 April 1881. He died 37 years after leaving Ohio, Carthage and Jasper county the better for his being here.
Elizabeth preceded her husband in death in 1890.
