Berniece Caldwell Johnston Austad, 98, passed always on Jan. 13, 2011, at an assisted living in Boulder Colo.
Mother was born May 2, 1912, in Nampa on a farm located between Broadmore Golf Course and the sugar factory. It is believed the freeway now runs through it.
She was raised and schooled in Owyhee County in the Wilson area, where her parents, Alva and Mabel Caldwell ranched.
She married Ed Johnston in 1931, a neighbor boy whose family, Charlie and Mary Johnston, owned the Johnston Ranch at Wilson.
While at the ranch, four children were born to Ed and Berniece, Gloria, Carroll, Betty and Jim.
They lived at the ranch until 1943, when they moved to Washington to work in the shipyards.
Mother worked as a sheetmetal helper and Ed as a machinist.
The family moved back to Nampa in 1944, and Ed went to work at the PFE.
Mom worked as a fry cook at the Chicken Inn on 11th Ave. N., and later as a day cook at the Choo-Choo Drive-in on Garrity Blvd., for the Brooks family.
In 1955 she secured a job at Boise Valley Packing Co., as a helper in the sausage kitchen. She retired in 1974.
She was a member of the Meatcutters and Butchers Union.
Ed passed away suddenly on July 4, 1954. She later married Carl Austad in 1962.
Carl had two sons and two daughters.
Carl passed away in 1988.
Berniece was preceded in death by her husbands, Ed and Carl; a son, Carroll; a son-in-law, Darwin Stephens; stepson, Rudy Austad; stepdaughter, Carol; step grandson, Matt and her brother, Buck Caldwell.
