Dr. Opal Reddin
Dr. Opal Laurene Reddin, 84, went to be with her Lord after a four-year battle with cancer.
In life, Dr. Reddin considered it her greatest honor to be loved and owned by her Lord Jesus Christ and to have carried His word in her heart. She lived her favorite scripture to her last day, "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain." Phil 1:21.
Dr. Reddin was born Opal Laurene Smith April 23, 1921, to Walter and Addie Smith on a farm near Russellville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, the Rev. Thomas Wesley Reddin. Also preceding her in death were her brother, Virgil Smith, and her sisters, Violet Ruth Smith and Mary McCutchen.
Opal began full-time Christian ministry in 1942 and married Thomas in 1943 at which time they became ministry partners. In 1946, they were ordained together and served churches in Danville, Greenwood, Pottsville, Benton and Little Rock. Their children, Naomi, Joy and Michael, were their delight and an asset to their ministry.
Opal's pursuit of higher education continued her entire life. Having obtained her teaching license in 1936, she attended Arkansas Tech College from 1937-38, and taught grades 1-3 at Pleasant View from 1938-41, before attending Central Bible College in the fall of 1941. She received her B.A. in education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1965, her M.A. in English at Southwestern Missouri State University in 1969, a second M.A. in biblical studies in 1977 and a Master of Divinity from Assembly of God Theological Seminary in 1980. She received a doctorate in ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1985. Opal joined the faculty of Central Bible College in Springfield in 1968, where she remained for 24 years. She retired from CBC having taught more than 15,000 students as they followed their callings into the ministry and onto the mission field. Opal traveled for many years in ministry across the United States and overseas in the Philippines, Russia, Bulgaria and Ukraine. While dedicating her life to the education of ministers and missionaries, she also authored several books and publications.
Opal was widely honored. She was named to the Who's Who in American College and Universities (UALR and AGTS); the Directory of Distinguished Americans in Biblical Education; as Distinguished Educator in the AG, Delta Alpha; as CBC Professor Emeritus in Biblical Studies; and to the World-Who's Who in Religious Education. She was honored with the Opal L. Reddin Distinguished Chair of Pentecostal Truth in 1999 and with the Opal Reddin Biblical Research Library in Connecticut in 2005.
Survivors include a daughter, Naomi Brewer and husband, Thomas of Westlake Village, Calif.; twins, Joy Neubauer and husband, Richard of Falls Church, Va., and Michael D. Reddin and wife, Carol of Ogden, Utah. She is also survived by five granddaughters, Michelle Brewer Craig, Heather Reddin Patterson, Aimee Neubauer Colfer, Sara Brewer Adams and Vanessa Reddin Hunt; one grandson, Adam Neubauer; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition, Opal has one brother, Luther Smith and wife Lawanda; two sisters, Reba Woods and husband James and sister Faith Price; four nieces and one nephew; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, at Central Assembly of God, Springfield, Mo. A second service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Humphrey Funeral Service in Russellville.
Viewing in Springfield, Mo., will be at Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Sunday between 3 and 5 p.m. Viewing in Russellville will be at Humphrey Funeral Service between 11 a.m. and noon Tuesday. Burial will be at BALL HILL Cemetery at Russellville by Humphrey Funeral Service.
