He enlisted as a Private in Co. F of the 4th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on Sept 16, 1861. He was promoted to 7th CPL on March 21, 1863; to 5th CPL on Jan 1, 1864; then to 3rd CPL on May 1, 1864. He mustered out on Dec 4, 1864, at Memphis, Tennessee.
