Haig Varadian 81, of Cranston died June 21, 2007.
He was the beloved husband for 56 years of Anahid (Karentz) Varadian. Son of the late Sarkis and Ramella Varadian and devoted father of Paul Varadian and his wife Vartus of Newton, MA, Diana Varadian of Cranston, and Christine Johnsen and her husband David of Norway; loving grandfather of six; and dear brother of Melkon Varadian, Mary Kachadoorian, and the late Varad and John Varadian.
A 1944 graduate of Cranston HS, he was an All-State wrestler, and member of the track team.
Varadian served as a Staff Sergeant in the Armys famous 3rd Division Combat Infantry Unit during World War II; recipient of the Combat Infantryman's Medal with two battle stars, two Purple Hearts, and the Bronze Star for valor.
A 1950 Brown University graduate he was a member of its wrestling team. He coached the Cranston HS Wrestling team from 1950-61 winning many State Championships. He was named "RI Wrestling Coach of the Year" five times. He coached the Cranston HS track team and Park View Junior HS track is named in his honor. His professional career spanned 41 years in the Cranston School System as a secondary school Administrator at Cranston HS East and West, and as Principal of Park View Junior HS, retiring in 1990.
Considered "the Father of Rhode Island Wrestling", Haig devoted 50 years to the sport. He founded the RI Interscholastic League's Wrestling program in the early 1950's, serving on its Principals Committee on Athletics for 20 years, and 40 years on the Council of the NE Principals' Assoc., 25 years as its Executive Director of all NE high school sports championships.
Varadian was inducted into the RI Heritage Hall of Fame, RI Wrestling Hall of Fame, NE Wrestling Hall of Fame, Cranston Hall of Fame and Cranston HS Hall of Fame. He was chosen USA Wrestlings Man of the Year, and an alternate official for the 1960 Olympic Games.
Varadian received the Presidential Citation for outstanding service in the International People to People Program. He is an Honorary Member of the Armenian Youth Federation.
Funeral Service is Monday at 11:00 a.m. in Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, Providence, followed by interment with Military Honors at North Burial Ground Cemetery, Providence. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
