MARTIN BRECHAL. Born in Prussia; died in West Penn, Pa., February 13, 1831. He enlisted near Allentown, Pa., in April, 1777, in Capt. Anthony Seeling's company in Col. Hazen's "Congress" regiment for three years. At the expiration of his term of service e again enlisted at Wyoming, Pa., in the same company and regiment for the rest of the war. He was in the battles of Brandywine, Monmouth, Newtown, Short Hills and Yorktown.

Martin Brachall Bailey was a farmer, taught school until the age of twenty-one, worked in silver mines near Leadville, Colorado, for three years and was mining superintendent.
Martin was educated at Georgetown at Earlham College and at Columbian Law School.
He was chief of the law division of the Pension Bureau four years and practiced law in Danville since 1892. He was elected to the Illinois state House of Representatives in 1894, 1896 and 1898, to the Senate 1901-1903 (18th District), 1903-1905, 1909-1933 (22nd District). He was Mayor of Danville two terms, 1899 to 1903. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Els, Odd Fellows, Red Men, Shriners, Phi Delta Theta and Sons of the American Revolution.

Martin was the third of four children born to Joseph Bailey, b. Aug. 16, 1820 in Haverhill, Essex County, MA. and d. Oct. 17, 1905 in Vermilion County, IL. &

In May 4, 1853 Joseph Bailey married Miss Sarah Ann Brachall, born Dec. 4, 1833 in Vermilion Co. (Marr. rec. - Vol. A, p. 195).
Joseph and Sarah Bailey's children were:
1) Edward Everett, b. 1853, d. in Danville, 1893. The eldest of the four children. He served as United States Consul at Ensenada, Mexico from 1902-1909. He died in 1913.
2) Sarah Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Bailey, born June 2, 1855 in Indianola, Vermilion, IL., was the wife of Jesse C. Moore, who for several years was connected with Rand, McNally & Company of Chicago. He was then Indian agent of Parker, Arizona. but continued to make his home in Danville and with them Sarah's father, Joseph was living. Jun. 2, 1855
'Lizzie died Jul. 27, 1922 in Danville, Vermilion County, IL.
3) Martin Brachall Bailey., a prominent citizen, born at Indianola, Illinois, January 22, 1857. He married Lucie Payne of Rock Island and had three children. He was a leading attorney and the mayor of Danville, as well as state senator (Republican)from his district. Martin was educated at Georgetown at Earlham College and at Columbian Law School. He was a farmer, taught school until the age of twenty-one, worked in silver mines near Leadville, Colorado, for three years and was mining superintendent. DANVILLE, Ill., July 23 - A long siege of poor health ended with the death of Martin B. Bailey, 77, a republican who served a term as state senator from the 22nd district between 1900 and 1932. Bailey had taught school, farmed and worked in a silver mine before taking up a political career.

DANVILLE, ILL., July 27. -Martin B.Bailey, 77, Republican, who served seven terms as State Senator from the Twenty-second District between 1900 and 1932, died here today.
He retired in 1932 and had been in poor health for some time. Bailey taught school, farmed and for a time worked in the Colorado silver mines before taking up a political career.
He also spent four years in service with the War Department and in the Treasury and practiced law here. Bailey is survived by three children.
