Helen Payne Bailey, 86, born and raised in Danville, Illinois, died April 15 at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, IL, her residence for the last thirty years.

Ms. Bailey was the daughter of Lucy Payne Bailey of Rock Island and the late Senator Martin B. Bailey of Danville, Illinois. He served seven terms in the State of Illinois Senate and House of Representatives from 1894 to 1932, was Mayor of Danville from 1899 to 1902, and was state campaign manager for President William McKinley.

Helen Bailey received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Illinois in Urbana and did graduate work at Smith College and at the University of Chicago in her profession of social case work. She was a social worker for Western Electric, and for the school districts of Kirkwood, Missouri, Rock Island, Illinois, and Elmwood Park. She retired from the Illinois State Department of Mental Health after working there from 1961 to 1973.

She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Dr. Joseph Cannon Bailey, professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and Martin B. Bailey, a life-long resident of Danville. She is survived by the children of her two brothers.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 on May 26, at the Unity Church, Oak Park.

Her ashes will be interred next to her parents in Springhill Cemetery in Danville, Illinois.
