Gertrude H. (Briggs) Barnum, 82, of 915 South Main St., owner of the former Chalet Restaurant, died Monday in a local nursing home.

She had operated the restaurant until 1958 when she began working at the former Jug End Barn in Egremont. She also was known for making cakes for weddings and other special occasions.

Born in Great Barrington, she attended schools there. She was the oldest member of United Methodist Church, had served on the administration board of the church, and was a past president of its Women's Aide Society.

Her husband, Irving L. Barnum, died in 1941.

She leaves a daughter, Betty A. Graham of Great Barrington; three sons, Harold I. and David R., both of Great Barrington, and Clarence S. Barnum of Egremont; three sisters, Helen Crine of Great Barrington, and Florence Glenn and Marion Briggs, both of New Haven, Conn.; eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday morning in the church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday afternoon and evening. Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home is in charge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church in care of the funeral home.
