Gloria "Peaches" Ann Amos, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, nana, aunt, cousin and friend, left for her heavenly home Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at her residence. We lost our Peaches to a debilitating and devastating disease, ALS. Funeral: noon Thursday at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, 1801 Evans Ave., Fort Worth, 817-927-2463. Interment: Skyvue Memorial Gardens. Wake: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church. An AKA Ivy Beyond the Wall ceremony will take place at 7 p.m.; sorors, please wear white. On May 11, 1944, Peaches was born to her loving parents, George and Hattie Mae Crew. She was welcomed by her adoring big sister, Lorean Mays Petty Strain, who predeceased her at the age of 26 in a tragic car accident in 1957. Peaches attended James E. Guinn and graduated in 1962 from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School, where she was homecoming queen. She obtained a BS in education from Lincoln University in 1966 and a master's in counseling and guidance from Texas Womn University in 1981. She met her future husband, James S. Amos, while in kindergarten and they wed April 18, 1966. To this union two children were born Mishaun and Aaron. She truly loved her husband and children, but the apples of her eye were her grandchildren, Courtland, Kennedy (Nana's Girl), Collin and Olivia. Gloria worked for the Fort Worth ISD as a teacher and counselor before retiring in 2003 after 37 years. During her tenure, she met many co-workers who became true friends along the way. Peaches was baptized at an early age at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Later she joined and became a faithful member of Mount Pisgah Missionary Church, where she was a devoted Sunday school teacher, choir member, training union member and a member of the Truth Seekers Sunday School Class. As her health began to fade, her faith and desire to be the best Christian never faltered. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and a charter member of the Mid-Cities Chapter of Links. Our Peaches was always smiling, cheerful, encouraging, loving, helpful, nurturing and a true diva in every sense of the word. Her hobbies included shopping, shopping and more shopping. The family would like to extend expressions of gratitude to Joseph Austin Jr., M.D., American Hospice, her numerous nurses and caretakers, Opal Eubanks and friends who comforted her on this journey. She was predeceased by her father, George Crew; stepfather, Lloyd E. Watts; and sister. Survivors: Her remaining family members who are waiting to be reunited with her include her loving husband of 44 years, James S. Amos; daughter, Mishaun King (Charles); son, Dr. Aaron Amos(Crystal) of Orlando, Fla.; grandchildren, Courtland and Kennedy King, Collin and Olivia Amos; mother, Hattie Mae Watts; niece, Rory Petty Steward; and a host of loving relatives, friends, church members and co-workers.
