Lyle was a son of Jennie Sharpe and Frederick Stanley Keene. On December 31, 1915, he married Myrtle Philo at the Presbyterian church in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Rev. Webster performed the ceremony. The couple raised four sons: Frederick Philo, Dale Ralph, Roger Edwin, and Wayne Paul.

In 1917, he was employed by the Raub Improvement Company in Dallas, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, a farm laborer. In 1930, he was working as a mechanic at a grinding mill. In 1942, he worked for Wright Aero Corporation in Paterson, New Jersey as a mechanic.
