Joseph 'Joe' Scalia, 79, of Vail, Tyrone R.D., died Sat., Jan. 8, 2011 at home. He was born in Huntingdon to Basil & Catherine (Blett) Scalia. He married Pauline Luciano on Nov. 24, 1960, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cumberland, MD. Survived by wife; daughter, Joby (Scott) Scalia Hunter, of Tyrone; granddaughter, Taylor Hunter; step grandson, Dustin; and sister, Dorothy (Ken) Lutz, of Fayetteville. Predeceased by 5 brothers and 3 sisters. Joe came to Tyrone in 1957 as an employee of the Villa Restaurant until 1959 and in the early 1970's returned to the Villa. He was owner/operator of Greenwood Steak House, which closed in the early 1960's and also the Tyrone Steak House, which closed in 1972. He was employed as a salesman at Claster's where he worked during the day and at the Villa at night. He also worked at Wheland Construction Co. as an estimator and had owned the Pet Store on Pennsylvania Ave., Tyrone which he sold in the mid-70's. He opened LaScalia's Restaurant in 1988 in Vail and in 2006, reopened as Joe's Place. From April 2010 until October 2010, he opened and operated his bakery. As a young man, Joe walked to work every day past Heckman's Bakery in Chambersburg and in exchange for washing pots and pans, he was taught how to bake pies. Member, Abundant Life Fellowship Church of Philipsburg; Tyrone Lions Club and Southern Alleghenies Chef's Assn. Searer Funeral Home, Tyrone. Private interment, Bald Eagle Cemetery.
