Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born at Hoflas, Bavaria, Germany, he served as a Private in Company G, 7th Indiana Infantry, Union Army. On the first day of the battle of the Wilderness Campaign, Virginia, May 5, 1864, Private Opel captured the flag of 50th Virginia Infantry, Confederate Army. For bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on December 1, 1864.
