William Christian Opel, aka Christian Wilhelm Opel, was born in Bavaria to Wolfgang and Anna K Fischer Opel. The family arrived in America 23 Jan 1854 after a journey of 90 or more days and made their home in Fugit Township, Decatur County, Indiana. He enlisted in Company G, 7th Regiment, Indiana Infantry in the Fall of 1861 and served 3 years, inducted as a private and discharged a corporal; wounded in the thigh. He married Catherine Trautman, 4 October 1864 in Indiana, moving to Woodford County, Illinois before settling in Holt County, Missouri before 1876.
