Thomas Buller Claiborne was born Feb. 26, 1823 in Eatonton Putnam Co., GA and died Nov. 16, 1864 at Camp Chase in Columbus Franklin Co., Ohio.

Thomas Buller Claiborne, son of James Claiborne and Sarah (Brooking) Claiborne.

Thomas Buller Claiborne, married Louisiana Lanier, daughter of John Montgomery and Lucy W. (Yarborough) Lanier, and granddaughter of Benjamin Allen and Dolly (Nance) Lanier.


Thomas Buller Claiborne, Co. F 66th GA Volunteer INF was captured near Atlanta GA Jul. 22, 1864, imprisoned at Camp Chase, near Columbus, Ohio, and died at the prison Nov. 16, 1864.

Thomas enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 22 August 1863 at Eatonton, Georgia. He was mustered as a Private in Capt. A.H. Reid's Company aka Company F, 66th Georgia Infantry. On 22 July 1864 he was captured near Atlanta, Georgia and received at Camp Chase Prison in Columbus, Ohio on 2 August 1864. He died of diphtheria at Camp Chase on 16 November 1864 and was buried in grave #474. HE IS LISTED AS THOMAS B. CLAYTON on the list of prisoner buried at Camp Chase, Ohio. Thomas is the son of James Claiborn (b.1780) and Sarah Brooking (b.1784) and was born in Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia. Some contributors say his middle name is Bullard and others say Buller. According to DAR approved applications his middle name came from his grandfather, Buller Claiborne who fought in the American Revolution. He married Louisiana M. Lanier on 4 January 1855 at Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia and from this union had the following known children: James H. (b.1857), William R. (b.1859), and Thomas B. (b.1864). After Thomas's death, Louisiana married Christopher Cullen Grimes on 6 December 1866 at Eatonton, Putnam County, Georgia.

(following info by Dennis Brooke) Inscription on tombstone #474 reads "THOS. B. CLAYTON CO. G 56 GA. REG. C.S.A.". The actual person buried in this grave is Thomas B. Claiborn of Company F, 66th Georgia Infantry.

On his Confederate Compiled Military Service Records he is listed as Thomas B. Claiborne but Georgia census records indicate his surname was spelled as Claiborn.

His Federal POW Records stated he was taken prisoner during the Atlanta Campaign between 7th May and 2nd September 1864.

The 1860 United States census listed him living in Putnam County, Georgia and according to the history of the 66th Georgia many men in Company F of the 66th Georgia came from Putnam County.

The day after General Sherman left for his March to the Sea Private Thomas B. Claiborn died at Camp Chase.
