Retired Minister Dies at 86 Years

The Rev. Joseph Christian Rieger, 86, pastor of Metairie Evangelical and Reform church for 15 years before his retirement in 1946, died Sunday at 2:45 a.m. He resided at 5323 Baccich

Funeral services will be conducted today at 3 p.m. from St. Matthew Evangelical and Reformed church, 1333 S. Carrollton, where the Rev. Mr. Rieger served as pastor years ago. Interment will be in Garden of Memories cemetery. Funeral arrangements in charge of William Betz & Sons.

The Rev. Mr. Rieger, whose wife was the late Elizabeth Quinius Rieger, came to New Orleans as pastor of St. Matthew church in 1893. After 12 years there, he moved to San Angelo, Tex., and subsequently filled pastorates in Sedalia, Mo., and Quincy, Ill.

He returned to New Orleans in 1930 when he was appointed pastor at the Metairie church. A native of Jefferson City, Mo., the minister was educated at Elmhurst college in Elmhurst, Ill.

Survivors include two sons, Paul William and Joseph A. Rieger of New Orleans.
