Mary Elizabeth Layfield was the eldest child of John Jackson Layfield Sr. and Elizabeth Moats. She was born in Wood County, Virginia, which later became Ritchie County, West Virginia. Mary Elizabeth Layfield and Uriah D. Shrader married in 1858 and lived in Ritchie County, West Virginia.

Their children were:

1. Phoebe Shrader: birth 1859 - died 1885

2. John Shrader: birth Feb 16, 1863 - died 1864

3. Jacob Uriah Shrader: birth 1865 - died 1929.

Uriah Shrader served with Mary's father and some of her brothers. He lived to return home.

Mary Elizabeth Layfield Shrader was buried in Layfields Cemetery as is her husband Uriah Shrader. Her headstone is believed to be one the early headstones with name inscription worn off, located at the rear of the cemetery. The stone appeared to be concrete or sandstone, very weathered.
