C. DeGeest Rites Held
Cornelius DeGeest, Miller, died Saturday, Jan. 13 at the age of 83.
Mr. DeGeest was born October 27, 1895 at Pella, IA the son of Cornelius and Mary DeGeest. He married May Wilson at Pella, IA, December of 1916.
They farmed near Harvey, IA until 1924 when they moved to Midland Township southeast of Ree Heights. Later they moved to Riverside Township north of Ree Heights. Then he moved to a small farm on the east edge of Miller where he farmed for several years. In 1956, he quit farming and went to work taking care of grain in the government binsites in Hand County until his retirements in 1964.
He is survived by one son, Robert, Miller; four daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Vera) Dean, Miller, Mrs. Vern (Wilma) Baule, Andover, Mrs. Robert (Opal) Roach, Rockham and Mrs. Albert (Mary Lou) Saville, Pomona, CA; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Leonard (Isabelle) Lechtenberg, four brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 16 at the Reck Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerhardt Landgrebe officiating. Burial was in Morningside Cemetery at Ree Heights.
Active pallbearers were Galen Dean, Robert DeGeest II, David Merxbauer, Richard Saville, Terry Merxbauer and Larry Merxbauer. Honorary pallbearers were Darrah Heasley, Fred Phinney, Henry Namanny, Marsh Johnson, Bernard Vens, Putt Siemen, Burrell Collins and Charles Deuter.
