Pleasant E. J. Bettis was the son of Nancy Millikan Bettis and Duke Kimbrough Bettis; and oldest brother of Josephine, Theodosia, Frances, Mary, Duke G, Jemima and Ida.
P.E.J. Bettis married Martha A. Walker on October 28, 1874. The service was conducted by Rev. Israel Bebout. A daughter Ida Elizabeth was born a year later in Missouri.
In 1886, P.E.J. Bettis married Emma Etta Coffman. They were the parents of Lena, George, Charles, Virgil, Cortis, Etta and Beulah.
His health was starting to decline when the Bettis family moved from Crittenden County, Kentucky to College Park, Georgia in about 1905. He had several light strokes. The last one rendered him speechless and almost blind. His last wish was to die in his sleep, which the family felt God granted.
