Duke G. Bettis was the son of Nancy Millikan Bettis and Duke Kimbrough Bettis. The 1900 census says that he was born in May 1864, while his grave marker says that he was born in 1862. Other census records (1870 and 1910) support a 1864 birth. He was the brother of Ples, Josephine, Theodosia, Frances, Mary, Jemima and Ida.

Duke was married three times. First to Hattie Eustise. Their daughter was Roena Bettis Waltz. Nancy Jane Beard was wife number two. His last wife was Nancy Belle Isle Bettis. Their children were Nora, Lula, Fannie, Josephine, Myrtle, Duke Jr and Louise.

In 1900, Duke and his family were living in Crittenden County, KY and he was a carpenter. The Bettis family moved from Crittenden County, KY to Fulton County, GA a little after Fannie was born in 1904.

In the 1910 census, Duke was listed as a building contractor. Duke was also the Mayor of College Park, Georgia (1909-1910). In February 1911, Duke was depressed and shot himself.
