Matt loved cars, big trucks, earth moving machines, tractors, and similar vehicles. He loved blowing raspberries on his sister's tummy to make her laugh. Before she could crawl, he crawled up and down the hall circling her until she herself learned to crawl. In January, 1982, Matthew was hospitalized at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital in Pensacola for two weeks with pneumonia. Just after that, he broke his leg. In 1984, a lymph node in his neck began to swell, and he was put on antibiotics. Two weeks later, he was hospitalized at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola because he couldn't stand, keep food down, and had an enlarged lymph node. A biopsy was done on the lymph node, but the results were inconclusive. His doctors ran many tests to exclude Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkins, and decided he must have Cat Scratch Disease (thought to be viral at that time, but is now known to be bacterial). His doctors stopped giving him antibiotics, as they didn't seem to be helping. He began having seizures on September 21, and was moved to Neuro Intermediate Care, and then to Intensive Care, where he coded on September 22, around 2:00 am, and was put on a respirator. He had an ICP probe inserted, which showed intracellular swelling of the brain. Tests were done for blood flow on September 23, and it was determined he had none to his brain. On September 24, after his grandparents said goodbye, artificial life support was removed and he died peacefully in his mother's arms. His funeral Mass was at St. Anne's Catholic Church Bellview and he was buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery.
