Mary Alice was a daughter of Martha Ann Thompson and John B. Shuman. Her siblings were Albert James Shuman, Charles W. Shuman, Laura Ellen Shuman, and Glendora Shuman; her half sister was Emma Shuman. Mary Alice's grandparents were Elizabeth and John Carpenter Shuman and Henrietta Johnson and Joseph Spencer Thompson, Jr.
"Mrs. Mary Loftus Mary Alice Shuman was born Sept. 27, 1861 and departed this life Jan. 7, 1942, aged 80 years, 3 months and 11 days. Mary's parents died when she was young and she lived for many years with Wm. S. Tyier and wife. On Feb. 23, 1888 she was united in marriage with James Loftus, who preceeded her in death Aug. 5, 1936. To this union were born four children, Lee, Edna, Albert and Leslie. Edna died in young womanhood; Leslie died in infancy. She is survived by two sons, Lee and Albert; two daughters-in-law; four grandchildren, Wallace, Donald, Alberta and Loren; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Anna Shuman, Mrs. Nettie Loftus and Mrs. Grace Loftus; and many other relatives and friends. She united with the Methodist Church when young and remained a faithful member until death. Mrs. Loftus had a cheerful disposition and will be sadly missed by her many friends.
