Private, Co. I, 123 OH Infantry, 8/7/1862 to 6/12/1865
Michael Painter 123rd OH Infantry Co. D Pvt., prisoner Petersburg 1865, released at Appomattox Court House at Lee's surrender. In December [1864] the Regiment was attached to the 24th Corps, near Deep Bottom [VA] and laid in camp until March, 1865. It participated in the battles at Hatcher's Run, and Petersburg [VA] in the spring of 1865 and was captured again, after a severe fight, while on an expedition to burn High Bridge on the South Side Railroad. The Regiment was carried along with the Rebel army as prisoners of war to Appomattox Court House. At this location the Rebels surrendered and the Regiment rescued. The Regiment mustered out on June 12th, 1865.
PAINTER, MICHAEL, farmer; was born in Madison Township May 2, 1839. His father, the late Andrew Painter, resided east of Mansfield for a great many years, where be followed farming, and also proprietor of a carding-mill, which still stands; in this business Michael was engaged during its continuance, and afterward at farming. He was married in 1868 to Miss Margaret Sproats, by whom he has raised two sons. Now a resident of Madison Township.

C. [Clement] A. PAINTER operates his steamboat, Flyer on Coos bay and is employed as tender of the government bridge. He bought his vessel ten years ago and since that time has been a familiar figure on the bay. He was born in Mansfield, Ohio, November 8, 1868, and is a son of Michael and Margaret (Spratt) Painter. His father is a native of Ohio and was born in the same house in which our subject's birth occurred. He engaged in farming in connection with the operation of a woolen mill and a tile and brick yard, and was prominent in agricultural circles of Ohio. He served for three years in the One Hundred and Twenty-third Ohio Volunteer infantry during the Civil war and was wounded in the left shoulder by a cannon ball. He is now living retired.

Respected Member of G. A. R. Passes Away
Michael Painter died last Saturday morning at the home of his son, C. A. Painter. Mr. Painter was a Civil War veteran and was 78 years of age. He is survived by his aged wife and two sons, C. A. Painter of this city and A. [Andrew, for his grandfather] J. Painter [b. 10/1867, d. 5/27/1920, a photographer of some note, buried I.O.O.F Cemetery, Fairbanks AK, plot # 1512 in Fairbanks, Alaska.]
The funeral was held Monday afternoon and was largely attended.
