Jacob Painter, son of Catharine (née Keith) and Andrew Painter, was born near Mansfield in Madison Township, Richland County, Ohio.

Jacob Painter and Nancy Douglass were married on 16 December 1869 in Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana. The couple had one son, Samuel A. Painter, born 8 October 1870 in Madison Township, Richland County. Nancy Jane Painter died 3 April 1879 in Madison Township.

The following year, Jacob Painter headed a separate family in his elder brother Henry's house; this family consisting of his son and his unmarried sister Jane. For a time, he was a partner in Painter & Shaw, a brick and tile firm.* In the 1900 U.S. Census, at the age of 63 he was a "placer miner," mining in stream beds, in Coos County, Oregon. He died 8 years later in Ohio.

Burial

Likely buried at Painter Gravesite. His parents are known to have been buried there.

Mrs. William Metz, who lived near the Painter burial ground, related that she and her mother had tended the burial ground for a number of years.
"Mrs. Metz said the burial ground is reported to have contained as many as 40 graves at one time. Virtually all of the markers are gone now and it is next to impossible to locate the graves.
"Mrs. Metz said there are stories of a powder mill blast at the burial site a long time ago. Many of the markers were destroyed then." (Virgil A. Stanfield, "Downtown Monument Really No Mystery," News Journal, Mansfield, Ohio, 14 Sep 1975, p. 5-F.)
