Charlie went to high school in Ponder, Texas, and then attended Severn Park Preparatory School at Severn Park, Virginia. While there he lettered in baseball, football and wrestling. He won the championship fo the New England states in lightweight wrestling in 1920. He entered the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. When he was in his third year at the academy, he was forced to resign his commission as the Navy was forced to reduce the size of the military due to the terms of WWI peace treaty. They let the men take exams to see who might stay. Charley decided to resign. After his father's death from Black Small Pox, he went to California where he worked in the brokerage business. He later moved on to Ohio where he worked in the Overland Car Factory. He was also a driller with shell Oil Company and went on to own a grocery business in San Angelo, Texas and later had a motel and restaurant in Chrystal City, Texas.
