She was born April 19, 1923 in Danville, a daughter of Millard M. Martin and Marion Kate Aaron Martin. She had lived her entire life in Danville, was a graduate of Schoolfield High School where she was class valedictorian and President of her senior class and retired from the design department at Dan River Mills.
Mrs. Handy was first married to Joe P. Lewis, Jr., who died December 28, 1972 and later married Curtis Daniel Handy, who died January 26, 2004.
Survivors include a son, Danny L. Lewis and wife, Laura of Danville; step-daughters, Nora Gower, Vickie Tarrant, Joyce Seay and Margaret Raines; three grandchildren, Danny L. Lewis, Jr. and wife Carolyn, Tammy L. Anderson and Kelly L. Hamilton and husband, Daryl; six step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Mable L. Martin and Ophelia Gentry and a granddaughter, Amy Lewis Head.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, January 3, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. from the Mausoleum Chapel at Danville Memorial Gardens by the Reverend David Turbyfill.
The family will receive friends at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel on Sunday January 2, 2011 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and at other times be at the residence of her son, 209 Parkview Place, Danville.
