Priscilla L.BEAL passed away Dec. 15, 2010. Mary Priscilla Louise Jenkins Beal was born in Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 6, 1916.

She grew up in a family that loved reading and talking about reading.

Every year since she was 14, Priscilla has made that same New Years' resolution: to have a hell of a good time. And for her, the best times have always had books at their center.

Priscilla studied at the University of Northern Colorado and in 1936 left the glowing metropolis of Greeley to teach at Morning View School, a little one room schoolhouse in Holyoke, Colo. During World War II, she lived in Seattle, Wash. for 31/2 years, while her husband, Kermit Beal, served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.

She held a fascinating job at the Maps and Records Section of the Army Engineers. She spent almost every evening at the Seattle Library, reading and watching the ships on the waterfront. After the war she and Kermit moved back to Nebraska and then Colorado to raise their daughter, Mary Pat.

Priscilla has committed her life to reading and learning, and empowering others to read and learn. She instigated the founding of the Johnstown Public Library, served for many years as a member of the Loveland Public Library Board, and was a charter member of the Junior Great Books Club in Loveland.

Everywhere she lived she founded book clubs, and through them forged enduring friendships; friendships with the intimacy and depth only book lovers understand. Priscilla said that reading at any time is a rich delight, and when she thinks of the hundreds of books she has read, she considers it a deep, rewarding river of pleasure. Priscilla also loved to travel, and saw many parts of the world through the Friendship Force, an international exchange organization.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Patricia Neubauer, of Chandler, Ariz., her granddaughter, Megan Bates of San Francisco, Calif., grandson Devin Bates of Bemidji, Minn., and three great-grandchildren, Yesui Ujin Bates, Yosha Gottbrath, and Forrest Bates.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Priscilla's Book Shelf at the Loveland Public Library, 300 N. Adams, Loveland, CO, 80537. Phone number 970-962-2665. The contributions would be deeply appreciated. Arrangements are being held under the direction of Carr Tenney Mortuary in Tempe, Ariz.
