Prior to enlistment, Thomas Spellman resided in Milford, Massachusetts and worked as a bootmaker. He enlisted as a Private on December 5, 1863 at the age of 21. He was assigned to Company H, 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery Regiment on December 7, 1863. He died of disease at New Bern, N.C.
