Sarah was the 5th of 11 children born to William Patton Braham and Rebecca Nancy Snyder. Her father owned 1000 acres of land for farming, he also drove cattle, sold land for oil & coal and for a few years served in the PA State Legislature.

Sarah married Dr. David J. Washabaugh in 1875 in Butler Co., PA. They named their seven children: Orline S, William P. B., Maggie M, Bessie B, Reba M, ? and George A Washabaugh. All of their children were born in Pennsylvania.
