Michael was the eldest family member to immigrate to America in 1853. He came with his eldest son, Patrick B. Kelly, along with Patrick's wife, also a Mary Ryan and their first four children, Bridget,Michael,Thomas and James Henry. Family information has them traveling by boat from Ireland to New Orleans and then by wagon to Illinois, where some Ryan relatives were living, then moved onto Iowa by 1857.
