Penelope Euphrasia "Nellie" Whitehead was born 1842 in Pactolus, Pitt County, NC the youngest of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born to farmer Howell Gray Whitehead Sr., and his first wife, Elizabeth Clark.

She was the paternal grandchild of Joseph Whitehead III and Sarah "Sallie" Gray of Halifax/Edgecombe Co; and gr-grandchild of Joseph Whitehead II and Pheraby Applewaite of Halifax Co. She is a direct descendant of Arthur Whitehead of Isle of Wight, VA, whose grandson, Col. William Whitehead first came to Edgecombe Co, NC in the early 1700's. On her mother's side she was the maternal grandchild of James Sampson Clark Sr. of Isle of Wight VA who came to Pitt Co, NC and married Winifred Hardy.

Nellie was just 2 years old when her mother passed in 1844. Her father would remarry within 2 years to Anna Brittain.

Nellie was 21 on January 3, 1863 when she married 36-yr old Rev. Lt. Moses T. Moye of Pitt Co, then active with the Wilson Partisan Ranger. The couple would settle in Wilson where Rev. Moye continued his ministry and became a successful businessman.

The couple would become parents to 6 known children: James Wilton Moye (1864-1870), Alfred Moye (1865-1942), Nellie Moye (1868-aft 1901), Olive Alice Whitehead Moye (1872), Susan Whitehead Moye (1882-1957), and Frances Clark Moye (1887-1963).

Nellie died in 1899 at age 57. Her husband of 36 years survived her 14 months, passing October 1, 1900 just a few weeks shy of his 73rd birthday.

Through her mother's lineage, Nellie was 1st Cousin to William Samuel Clark (1846-1929)of Tarboro, the very successful and wealthy dry goods merchant who founded the retail dynasty W. S. Clark & Sons.
