William Ross was born on April 6, 1809, in Augusta County, Virginia. He moved to Madison County, Kentucky, married Nancy Hawkins, and then relocated to Clay County, Missouri.

They owned the Ross Grist Mill, just north of Smithville, MO, west of Paradise on the Little Platte near where Shady Hollow Lakes used to be.

William and Nancy had ten children:
