Mr. Hubert W. Matthews, 87, lifelong resident of Dickerson, died of heart failure in Falls Church, Va. on April 13, 2007.
Devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, brother and dear friend to many, he leaves behind his wife Evelyn D. Matthews of Falls Church, Va.; daughter Nancy Cawley of McLean, Va.; daughter-in-law Lorraine Matthews of Gloucester Point, Va.; grandchildren Dale and Dean Matthews, Max and Kara Cawley, and Rick Bass; sister Doris Lewis of Beallsville; brother-in-law Herbert Dixon of Leesburg, Va; and six great grandchildren. His beloved son, Hubert "Bunky" Matthews Jr., predeceased him in November 2005.
Hubert Matthews was raised on a dairy farm in upper Montgomery County, where he learned reverence for family, hard work, and community. He started out delivering ice from his father's ice plant to homes and farms in upper Montgomery County, and later founded Matthews Distributing Company, a successful milk distributing enterprise, which served Maryland and Virginia for many years.
He inherited a love of music from his father, Walter K. Matthews and a caring nature from Eleanor Matthews, his mother. He played tuba in the Poolesville Band. His congenial personality, quick laugh and caring ways will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held to celebrate Hubert's life at 3 p.m. Monday, April 16 at the Hilton Funeral Home, 22111 Beallsville Road (Rt. 109), Barnesville, MD (hiltonfh.com) with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the funeral service.
