The daughter of John Dawson and Mary Burton Garrett, Alice married John Lewis Woolfolk on 20 Nov 1878 at Fee Fee Baptist Church in Bridgeton, St. Louis County, Missouri.

They were the parents of 1 child. John was a banker, but began focusing on acquiring real estate in 1895. He continued to purchase land and business buildings for the rest of his life.

The family lived in Moberly, Randolph County, Missouri early in their marriage, then moved to Clinton, Henry County, Missouri where they lived at the turn of the century. Alice's sister, Annie, made her home with them there.

Alice and John's only daughter, Mary Garrett Woolfolk, married Beverly Crump Platt in 1902 in a lavish wedding in Clinton. [See article attached to this memorial for a detailed description. Click on "View orginial" to enlarge the article.]

The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri around 1919. Alice was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Alice's husband, John, passed away in 1938. They were quite wealthy, but he died without a will. With Alice's approval, her daughter and son-in-law were named executors of the estate as it went through probate.

Alice lived until 1941. At the time of her death due to a cerebral hemorrhage, she was 89 years, 3 months and 29 days old.

She was survived by 1 daughter, Mary Platt; 1 son-in-law, Beverly C. Platt; 1 granddaughter; and 1 sister, Annie Dawson.

In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her mother and father; and 1 sister, Mary Dawson.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m. on the morning of 14 Aug 1941 at the family home.

According to records kept by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alice and her sisters were direct descendants of a Revolutionary War soldier.

Their mother, Mary Burton (nee Garrett) Dawson, was the daughter of Joseph H. Garrett (1784-1855) and Mary (nee Reiger) Garrett (1788-1860). Joseph H. was the son of John Garrett (1756-1836) and Mary (nee Hardin) Garrett (1760-1790).

Alice's great-grandfather, John Garrett, was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1756. He served as a private in the Virginia Line under Captain Pollard and Colonel Slaughter. John married Mary Hardin in 1783. He died in Scott County, Kentucky in 1836.

MRS. WOOLFOLK PASSES

Friends in Clinton will be grieved to learn of the death in Kansas City of Mrs. J. L. Woolfolk at the family home.

Mrs. Woolfolk spent many happy years of her life in Clinton, where Col. Woolfolk was for a long period prominent in business affairs. She was a woman of delightful personality, quiet and gentle in her demeanor and kindly to every one about her. They moved to Kansas City many years ago where Colonel Woolfolk continued his business activity until his death about three years ago.

There is left their only child, a daughter, Mary, wife of Beverly Platt. A sister, Miss Annie Dawson is the sole survivor of Mrs. Woolfolk's family.

The funeral service was held in a funeral home at 10 o'clock Thursday morning.
