The daughter of Captain Joseph Hardin Garrett and Mary "Polly" Reiger, Mary B.* married James Dawson on 25 Nov 1847 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 3 children.

At the time of her death, Mary B. was about 64-years-old. She was buried next to her father and brother.

Mary B. was survived by her husband, James; and 2 daughters, Annie and Alice.

In addition to her mother and father, Mary B. was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Mary S. Dawson.

Mary B.'s husband, James, remarried in the years following her death. He died in 1912.

According to records kept by the Daughters of the American Revolution, Mary B. was a direct descendant of a Revolutionary War soldier.

Her father, Joseph H. Garrett (1784-1855), married Mary "Polly" (nee Reiger) Garrett (1788-1860) in 1807. Joseph H. was the son of John Garrett (1756-1836) and Mary (nee Hardin) Garrett (1760-1790).

Mary B.'s grandfather, John Garrett, was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in 1756. He served as a private in the Virginia Line under Captain Pollard and Colonel Slaughter. John married Mary Hardin in 1783. He died in Scott County, Kentucky in 1836.

DAWSON--Tuesday, January 7, 1879, at 11:10 p.m., Mary Burton Garrett, wife of James Dawson.

Her funeral will take place on Saturday, 11th, at 12 o'clock m. [sic], from her late residence, on St. Charles Rock road, to Fee Fee Cemetery. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Carriages will leave the office of Geo. N. Lynch, undertaker, at 8 o'clock.
