H.G. THOMAS, SR., DIES AT HOME HERE
Henry Gray Thomas, Sr., 66, of 903 Sumter street, died last night at his home after an illness of six weeks. He had been seriously ill since Sunday. He had been a resident of Columbia for 42 years. He was born in Apple Grove, Ga., a town which has since changed its name to Almon, Ga. For several years Mr. Thomas was city sheriff and he was connected with the city administration for 25 years. He was a member of the Methodist church. He was the son of the late Henry Andrew and Isabel Gray Thomas. February 28, 1898, he married Miss Mary Pennington of Columbia, who survives him. Besides his widow, he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Floyd W. Thomas of McClellanville, Mrs. S. Dave Cartledge of Columbia, Mrs. Robert W. Coggeshall of Arlington, Va., and Miss Miriam Thomas of Columbia; four sons, Henry Gray Thomas, Jr., Ellis Pennington Thomas, Cunningham P. Thomas and Lovick Oliphant Thomas; one granddaughter, Betty Thomas; four grandsons, Henry Gray Thomas 3rd, Albert Patrick Thomas and Cunningham P. Thomas, Jr., all of Columbia, and Floyd W. Thomas, Jr. of McClellanville; one sister, Mrs. Colin S. Monteith, Sr., of Columbia; two brothers, Albert Thomas of Long Beach, Calif. and Lovick H. Thomas of Jackson, Miss., and a sister-in-law, Miss Ellie Pennington of Columbia, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon from the Dunbar Funeral home by the Rev. J.E. Merchant, pastor of the Green Street Methodist church. Interment was to be in Elmwood cemetery. Active pallbearers were to be his four sons. Honorary pallbearers were to be J. Trez Turner, J.L. Hester, Sr., H.L. Smith, W.H. Harth, Dr. R.L. Burnett, Frank N. Ehrlich, James H. Foeles, Sr., and T.P. Knox.
