Mrs. Mary Jo Monteith Dies At 90
Mrs. Mary Jo Monteith, 90, widow of Colin S. Monteith Sr., died Monday in a local nursing home after a long illness. Born in Fort Worth, Tex., she was a daughter of the late Henry Andrew and Isabella Gray Thomas. She moved to Columbia in 1899. Mrs. Monteith was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and the daughters of the American Revolution. She was an honorary life member of United Methodist Women. Surviving are two sons, Colin S. Jr. and Walter S. Monteith of Columbia, four daughters, Mrs. W.J. (Isabel) Gooding and Mrs. W.H. (Caroline) Harley of Columbia, Mrs. A. Frank (Martha) Lever Jr. of Lexington and Mrs. Ashley (Elizabeth) Halsey of Alexandria, Va.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Main Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harry M. Goewey. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Colin S. Monteith III, Edmund H. Monteith, Frank D. McNulty, Arthur K. McNulty, Walter S. Monteith Jr., Colin E. Harley, A. Frank Lever III and George E. Lever. Visiting hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. today in Dunbar Funeral Home, Gervais Street Chapel.
