He graduated from South Mountain High School in 1966 and worked at Big Bear Market as an assistant manager before joining the Army in 1967. SP4 Marquez served as an airborne qualified infantryman and Army Ranger with N Company, 75th Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade, USARV. Marquez was posthumously promoted to sergeant and was awarded a Bronze Star Medal.
